Abandoned baby rescued from drain: Mom wanted

A baby has been saved from certain death after she was found abandoned in a drain hole on a playground in Bekkersdal.

The Carletonville Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit urges the community to assist with any information that may lead to the possible identification of a mother who abandoned her baby.

Captain Solomon Sibiya from the West Rand District Police said at about 14:00 on August 5, a member of the public was on her way home to the Mandela section in Bekkersdal when she overheard people talking about a baby that was found abandoned at the Holomisa playgrounds.

“She decided to go to the playgrounds and on arrival, noticed a group of people already gathered around a drain hole near the playgrounds. As she got closer, she could hear the sound of the baby crying. The sound came from deep down the hole. The baby was taken out of the hole by concerned residents and later rushed to the local Bekkersdal clinic for medical examination. It was wrapped in blue and black plastics.”

According to Sibiya, the concealment of birth is a crime punishable by law.

“Anyone who feels that she can not keep her newborn baby must consult with local social workers and be educated and advised about the correct procedures of giving up the baby for adoption.”

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the person that is responsible for the abandonment of her baby at Holomisa playgrounds must call the FCS investigation officer, Detective Constable Mushamula on 072 395 6146 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
