#Women’sDay: RCA learners share their thoughts on successful women

The Herald visited Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA) to get a sense of what defines a successful woman.

With Women’s Day approaching, and to celebrate the history behind the holiday which is commemorated on August 9, various occasions are going to be taking place throughout the country.

The day is aimed at looking back at the momentous event where about 20 000 women stood in solidarity and marched to the Union buildings in Pretoria in 1956.

This was to voice out their stance against the country’s passed laws that required black South Africans under the Population Registration Act of 1950 to carry an internal passport known as a passbook.

In line with this, the Randfontein Herald decided to speak to some learners from Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA), to get a sense of what defines successful women for them considering the strides made by women since then.

The Herald also wanted to know who the learners in question regarded as successful women in their lives.

According to Takalani Ratshibvumo, a successful woman is essentially an independent woman in her eyes.

“Women should be in a position where they are independent and not reliant on anyone for their success. They should have to be able to stand up for themselves and able to go through challenges and come out strong,” said Ratshibvumo.

Asked about who is a successful woman in her life, Ratshibvumo was quick to point out her mother, as she takes care of her household without complaining.

Takalani Ratshibvumo says a successful woman is essentially an independent woman in her eyes.

Another learner Elzani Kirsten shares the same sentiments and agrees with Ratshibvumo’s statement.

“A successful woman to me means someone who is independent and has a good job, a good education and can take care of themselves. My mother is the most successful woman in my life because my dad has to work until late at night and she has three children that she needs to take care of and she does a good job,” said Kirsten.

Elzani Kirsten says a successful woman should have a good job, a good education, and should be able to take care of themselves.

Lastly, Reabetswe Mawunda said for her, a successful woman is someone who oozes passion and is resilient in her approach.

“A successful woman to me is someone passionate, confident, and resilient and a woman who knows what she wants and can go after it,” said Mawunda.

She added that her grandmother is the most successful woman in her life, as she took care of her while growing up and made her into who she is.

According to her, her grandmother is not defined by people’s opinions but knows what she wants and goes after it.
