• Spring is on its way
While we can stay in bed on a Sunday morning when a cold snap strikes, plants that grow on the Koppies rely on other measures to trigger their movements. The ledebouria that grows on the Koppies is a member of the hyacinth family. With a bulb the size of a small onion, the plant disappears at the end of summer and only re-emerges when longer days signal to it that it’s time to send out its shoots. Despite a very cool Sunday morning, the ledebourias have been spotted. They are telling us that spring is very definitely on its way. Spot them on many of the paths across the Koppies. Be careful not to squash them with your boot – they are so small that the whole plant can fit into your hand! Come and see if you can spot them and look out for other spring signs. Book on 079 532 0083 for a guided tour (leaves at 08:00 sharp – R100 per adult). Or self-guide yourself on the 3km heritage trail and learn just a little of the Koppies’ long history. Take in the different delights of the Koppies on the 5km hike, the grasslands, the riverine forest, and the tilted quartzite ridges. If it’s just some quiet time you’re looking for, do your own map reading and relax at the many viewpoints on the ridges. Open every Sunday morning from 08:00 to 11:30. Safe parking (opposite the Melville Koppies entrance) at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia. Security on the Koppies is provided. R90pp, R50 for U18; season ticket for a year per adult – R500 (not transferable). All income is used for the maintenance of the Koppies. • Stofskop returns to Randfontein Oval after long hiatus

This is a motorcycling event like no other; it’s a day that’s all about being a non-conformist and combining the thrill of the dirt track with that special feeling you get when you dress up as a superhero, a rhino, a unicorn, or whatever tickles your fancy. So, whether you’re a Stofskop veteran or a rookie rider, here is your chance to show SA’s motorcycle community what you’ve been hiding in your garage, your shed, or even in pieces under your bed.
