Cable theft leaves Westonaria residents in the dark

The power outage experienced in Westonaria is caused by cable theft and vandalism according to the municipality.

Cable theft and vandalism have been identified as two contributing factors to why parts of Westonaria are without electricity.

According to Rand West City Local Municipality spokesperson Phillip Montsiwa, as a result of the above Eskom had to implement a planned power shutdown from 10:00 until 16:00 on July 26 aimed at carrying out repairs to the substation due to damages emanating from the criminal acts.

“Eskom encountered a technical problem due to cable theft and vandalism at primarily a main substation in Westonaria, known as the Mars substation. As a result, the power utility had to implement the planned power shutdown on July 26, to carry out repairs,” said Montshiwa, who added that they apologise for the inconvenience caused by the shutdown.

He added that cable theft and vandalism cause significant electrical issues such as interrupted power supplies and can lead to costly repairs.

Meanwhile, areas that were affected by the shutdown include Westonaria Borwa, Venterspost and the Lucky farms.
