SA National Council for the Blind hosts major election session

The South African National Council for the Blind made history by electing its provincial committee for the first time on the West Rand.

The provincial structure of the South African National Council for the Blind hosted an elective plenary session at the Greenfields Lifestyle Estate in Greenhills recently.

According to the council’s chairperson Phillip Maibi, for the first time, a gathering of blind and partially sighted persons took place in the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM). The event was also joined by relevant stakeholders.

“This was an opportunity to introspect and elect the collective to take the province forward for the next four years. This occasion was blessed by the presence of the WRDM’s disability desk and member of parliament Jane Mananiso,” said Maibi.

He added that the gathering had many components which included the provincial election of the organisation’s youth and women structures.

The council is an organisation of blind people and also serves the blind community. It was established in 1929.

Maibi added that those elected on the day, have the responsibility to lead and advance the course of blindness and interests of blind and partially sighted persons in Gauteng including but not limited to issues of housing, employment, economic participation, education, and social cohesion to mention but a few.
