Young fashion designer determined to make it big in the industry

A 21-year-old who grew up in a single-parent household and comes from an impoverished background is making it big in the fashion industry.

Resident Nothando Nthaba is determined to change her life around and become successful, not only for herself but her family.

Initially from Lanseria and currently residing in Westonaria, the 21-year-old is a force to be reckoned with in the fashion industry. In addition and through various acts of kindness, she also wants to give back to those who come from impoverished backgrounds, like herself.

Her focus not only involves designing high-end fashion garments but also school uniforms for children whose parents cannot afford to, especially now that it is winter season. The Randfontein Herald met up with the inspiring Nothando who said she grew up in a single-parent household.

“I have had my fair share of struggle,” she said. As a result, she wants to make the most of her life, and achieving her dreams in the clothing industry is one way she believes will provide her with a better life going forward.

Nothando has four siblings and wants to build a big enough house for all of them one day.

“Growing up was very tough. I went to a farm school and there were certain opportunities I couldn’t reach. As a result, this made it impossible for me to make it into some of the varsities I applied to. I was rejected by all of them. This really affected me but I remembered I was once passionate about sewing and that maybe this is something I needed to pursue to bring change. As luck would have it, I then heard of the Ndimase Development Skills Centre and its product offering. They have a curriculum on sewing and this resonated with my dreams of becoming a fashion designer,” said Nthaba, who added that she took up a sewing course and is enjoying the programme.

She hopes that this will help her rise from her struggles and be able to change the situation back home. She also wants to show that being from an impoverished background does not mean that one has to let the struggle swallow their dreams.
