Local animal sanctuary needs help to keep their doors open

The upkeep of the animals in the care of Cast Away Animal Sanctuary has become challenging and Louisa Rossouw is appealing for donations in that regard.

Cast Away Animal Sanctuary needs dog and cat food – among other items – to ensure that they keep their doors open and that they can feed and take care of the cats and dogs in their care.

This comes as they are running low on the supply of dog and cat food and can no longer afford the expenses that come with their upkeep.

The Randfontein Herald spoke to the animal sanctuary’s founder and director, Louisa Rossouw, to get a sense of their struggles and find out what they are really about.

“We are not like any other shelter. Not only do we rescue stray animals in our area, but we also go the extra mile to ensure that they have a safe and loving home through our adoption process and home check process.

“This is where we visit someone’s home to see if the animal will be safe in their yards if they are adopted. We also rehabilitate, vaccinate, deworm, and sterilise our animals before they go to their new homes.

“What this means is that every animal’s medical and physical expenses are directly paid out of my pocket but with 238 cats and 145 dogs, I am no longer able to afford the expense,” Louisa said.

She further mentioned that petrol is too high and their reserves for dog and cat food are extremely low.
“We are also in desperate need of blankets this winter.”

She added that while some animals are often adopted by members of the community who become the animal’s foster parents, some of the other animals grow old in their care.

As a result, the upkeep of the animals becomes challenging over some time and Louisa is appealing for donations in that regard.
