Randfontein’s 96-year-old is still young at heart

The 96-year-old is a force to be reckoned and still walks on her own, with only little assistance. She turned 96 on June 17.

Ina Skene from West Porges is a ball of energy, young at heart and still full of life at age 96.

This was evident when the Randfontein Herald visited her recently at Friendship Haven Old Age Home where Ina is a resident and is being taken care of.

She was full of compliments for the people around her and cracked hilarious jokes time and again and literally lit up the room with her aura.

Although old age is upon her, this 96-year-old is a force to be reckoned with and still walks on her own, with only little assistance. She turned 96 on June 17.

Speaking to the Herald in an interview, Skene jokingly said she doesn’t want to be 96 and that everyone should look at her as a 69-year-old.

“Life is good and I’m very blessed to have reached this age. I love taking walks to keep healthy and I also like watching TV. I’m quite happy with life and I believe that God is always with me,” she said.

Her daughter, Linda da Silva, shared the same sentiments and said that her mother loves God and her Bible.

“Our mother is a talkative person. She loves people and is just a friendly human being. She also loves cleanliness and would always make sure that her house is spotless.

“She has a sweet tooth and I always make sure to get her treats every week,” said Linda.

Ina was born in Franschhoek in the Western Cape and is a mother of three women; Wendy Boshoff (66), Linda (64) and Heidi Hafkamp (59).

She is also a grandmother and great-grandmother and a valuable person in her family.

She previously lived in Cape Town and Durban where she worked over the years and later moved to Krugersdorp.

She is currently staying in Randfontein and moved to the town after the death of her husband James, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 87.

The Herald also spoke to Mpho Tisane who is an enrolled nurse at the semi-frail care unit within the old age home and she said that she has had a beautiful experience looking after Ina.

She described her as someone who loves looking and feeling good.

“Ina is truly a beautiful woman on the inside and out. She is always happy and just loves people. She has a beautiful earrings collection and loves putting on her lipstick and combing her hair, before going to the dining area, to sit and dine with other residents.

“This helps her keep positive and keeps her young at heart as well,” Mpho said.
