Inspector Rene van Straten said in November 2022 they received a complaint in Westonaria about a dog that had been tied up and was in pain.

Field officer Junior Cuna went out to the location but the owner refused to let him go to the back to see the dog.”

She said the community members who complained managed to send photos of what the dog looked like.

“On the photos, we could see there was a big problem, so we immediately went out to the property with the police after obtaining a warrant.”

Rene explained that when they arrived at the property, they saw where the chain had cut into the neck of a rottweiler and it had already started to cause an infection. The owner also had two other dogs which looked to be cared for and in good health.

She added that due to the rottweiler’s situation and the owner’s poor attitude, they decided to take all of the dogs, adding ‘if he can do it to one, he can do it to all of them’.

We removed them and opened up a case of animal cruelty. The accused pleaded guilty in court on June 2 and said he knew what he did was wrong.”

Rene added that he was sentenced to one month in prison or a R2 000 fine. He will however also have a criminal record.

“But the fact that he at least admitted he was wrong is a win for us.”
