Following the latest steep interest rate hike, budgets might be tight this Mother’s Day. Those who are looking for more affordable ways to show their mothers how much they care could look to the home for inspiration.

To help cash-strapped homeowners this Mother’s Day, RE/MAX of Southern Africa shared a few ideas on how to spoil your mother from home:
• Cover a monthly expense
Budgets might be tight right now which could cause households to cut back on their monthly spending. If your mom finds herself in this position, perhaps you could cover one (or more) of her expenses for her. Buy her a one-month streaming service gift card (like Netflix or Spotify) or offer to pay for her weeks’ groceries – anything to help lighten the load.
• Offer your help around the house
For those with aging parents, one of the best presents you could offer is a little free help around the house, seeing to those tricky maintenance issues or cleaning tasks that can become trickier to tend to the older one gets. Those with more cash to spend could offer to pay for a cleaning and/or gardening service to come around and spruce up the place.
• Invite her over for dinner
For most mothers, nothing beats spending quality time with the family. Invite her around for a meal she doesn’t have to cook or clean up after. Another idea might be to prepare her favourite meal and / or baked goodies and drop it off at her place to enjoy over a few days.
• Prepare a fun weekend stay-cation
Those whose mothers stay out of town could invite them over to spend the weekend in their spare bedroom. Treat your mother to a variety of at-home celebrations, from movie nights (her pick) to dinner parties, and trips down memory lane looking through old photo albums – whatever your mother enjoys.
• Hand her the keys to her dream home
For the husbands with toddlers who are too young to help with the gift-giving, why not offer your wife the ultimate gift of a new home? If your home is proving too small for the growing needs of your family, then perhaps it is time to start the search for a new home in which to celebrate Mother’s Day in 2024.
