RCA hosts anything-but-a-bag-day

The learners at the school were encouraged to be creative and bring anything but a bag to school to carry around their books and other essential items.

Scores of learners from Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA) swapped their usual choice of a backpack with anything but a school bag for one day.v c

This was today (April 14) at the school premises where the learners were keen to take part in the initiative dubbed Anything-but-a-bag-day.

Teano Mphore, Angela Moromane, and Ethan Ngobeni said they too loved this month’s theme of bringing anything but a bag to school.

RCA vice principal Vanessa Dreyer said this falls part of their theme day that they celebrate once a month.

“As part of our theme day that we have every month, we decided to have a day where the learners can’t bring their backpacks but rather find something else to carry their stuff in. The reason for doing this is to build some character and some teamwork as well.

Tshepang Ntsoane, Lolla Haywood, and Zenande Mthombeni said they had fun coming up with ideas for what to replace their backpacks with.

“We wanted the learners to also have some fun and take their minds off from their academics for a little bit and use their creative ideas. We also wanted to encourage children not to buy things but to use the things that they have at home and repurpose those items as a way of recycling.

“Another reason for this was to show them that they can have fun without having to pay hefty amounts,” said Dreyer.

She added that the learners were thrilled at the theme of the day and were excited to put together their makeshift backpacks.

According to her, what stood out the most during this initiative is the learner who replaced her school bag with a pot and put her school essentials in there.
