According to Rand West City Libraries Programs Librarian Thandeka Legae, they hope that this will help children adopt the culture of reading even when born and continue with it.

“In South Africa, we have low levels of literacy and this is a sad reality. We have to change the status quo so we can have a well-read generation and we can only do this by adopting the culture of reading. We want to have a well-read generation and we want to take the children off the streets.

“Studies have shown that if we as parents read for them while they are still in the womb then they get used to it and this is because they adopt whatever environment they are introduced to.

“Let’s start reading for these children while they are still in the womb. Let’s also read for them when they are born and let’s continue with this journey,” said Legae.

She also emphasised the fact that when one reads for their child or children, they also get to learn in the process.
