Manhunt launched for suspect in 38-year-old woman’s rape

A woman in her late 30s was first strangled and overpowered before being raped allegedly by someone known to her in Westonaria last week.

Westonaria Police have launched a manhunt for a man who first strangled and overpowered a 38-year-old woman before raping her in Kalabasfontein in Westonaria last Monday, March 6.

According to Westonaria Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Audrey Sefara, the victim was walking along a gravel road in the area when she came across a known suspect who then grabbed her from behind and strangled her.

“She tried to fight back but was overpowered and thrown to the ground. The suspect then undressed and proceeded to rape her,” said Sefara, who added the woman was assisted by a passer-by, but the suspect managed to get away on foot.

According to the information received, the suspect has a slender build, is light in complexion, is approximately 1.82cm tall, and has shoulder-long dreadlocks.

“A case of rape has since been opened and investigations are ongoing.”

Westonaria Station Commander Colonel Jurie Ferreira condemned the ruthless behaviour especially as it is related to gender-based violence.

“The police will work tirelessly to trace and apprehend the suspect,” she vowed.
