RCA switches things up for Valentine’s Day, wears blue

Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA) learners switched things up on Valentine's Day by wearing blue and donating non-perishable items for those in need.

Instead of wearing red outfits which are usually associated with celebrating Valentine’s Day, learners at Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA) decided to wear blue.

This was on February 14 and was aimed at celebrating Blue Friendship Day.

During Blue Friendship Day, learners at the school donate non-perishable items which will then be donated to those in need.
The learners also held a picnic later in the day, to celebrate their friendships.

The Herald spoke to Nandie Swart, a teacher at the school, who said their initiative is aimed at encouraging learners to be thoughtful of others at all times.

“The whole purpose of Blue Friendship Day is to have our learners bring non-perishable foods which we will then donate to orphanages as well as old age homes. By doing this, we are educating our children to think of others in need.

“Blue Friendship Day is also aimed at encouraging friendship in life and knowing that a friend in need is a friend indeed,” said Nandie, who added the initiative has been running for the past 13 years.

The Herald also spoke to one of the learners at the school, Zekhethelo Zwane, who said she is always excited this time of the year.
This is because she, together with other learners at the school, gets to have an opportunity to help those in need.
