English cricket clubs give back to SA schools

The senior cricket teams of Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord and Laerskool Westgold Primary recently faced off in a six-a-side friendly match.

Two cricket teams from West Rand schools recently squared off, but this was not a battle to see who was the best; rather, it was a friendly in which the teams got to check out their new sponsored kits and cricket equipment, which they received from local England cricket clubs.

On Monday, January 23, the senior cricket team from Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord and Laerskool Westgold Primary in Randfontein faced off in a six-a-side friendly match. Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord won by two runs.

Werner Koekemoer, one of the coaches from Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord explained that he received a call from a friend who he played rugby with many years ago – Tim Lindberg. Tim phoned him and told him that there were a few cricket clubs from England which wanted to sponsor their old cricket kits to schools in South Africa.

The kits were donated by Jan-Hendrik Russouw from the Beckenham Cricket Club in Kent, England. A total of 22 cricket bats, 15 helmets, 22 pairs of cricket gloves, 36 sets of cricket pads, cricket bags, clothes and repair kits for the bats were all donated.

The donations were then divided into two kits, the one to serve as Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord’s cricket kit and the other half to Laerskool Westgold Primary.

They would like to thank all those involved for their support and help especially Mark Pulford for transporting all the kits to Pirbright Cricket Club a well as his ongoing support for the project. They also thank Tim and the Pirbright Cricket Club for sponsoring all the repairs, arrangements and temporary storage of the kits.

Geoff Henebrey from Stanley’s Removals donated and arranged the international shipping of the goods to South Africa as well as Werner and Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord principal Charles Miller, Gerhard Myburgh and Johan Harding for all the arrangements including collecting, fixing, organising the day and distributing the kit.
