The youngster who has been battling to get her ID for some time told the Herald her struggles emanate from family politics which prevented members of her family from accompanying her to apply for her ID as required by law.

This meant that the 19-year-old’s life was at a standstill for some time as there were certain things she needed to require her ID. This includes furthering her education and obtaining a job. She was helped by social auxiliary worker at Sebueng Itumeleng home based care Mosala Koboyankwe, who came to her rescue in December last year.

Koboyankwe said he heard of Yambane’s story while doing his work in the area.

“We were busy doing our door-to-door campaign as part of our daily job to identify disadvantaged families with vulnerable children and that’s where we identified Katlego Yambane.

“During our conversation with her, she was able to open up to us and informed us that she was struggling to get an ID. She expressed that this weighed heavy on her but the fortunate part is that she does have a birth certificate. This made things a lot easier for us. We were able to locate her uncle who shared the same surname as Yambane and requested that despite their issues with his niece, he helped her out, as her life was seemingly stuck.

“The fortunate part is that he eventually agreed to cooperate and Katlego was finally able to get her ID on December 28. She was so happy on the day because without an ID, you are stuck so we are glad we were able to do this for. It gives us joy knowing that we were able to change Yambane’s life for the better,” said Koboyankwe, who added Yambane was very thankful for all their efforts.
