West Rand cops arrest 48 people for assault out of 182 during Okae Molao

More than 180 arrests were made mostly for assault during yet another operation Okae Molao held in the Rand West City, Mogale City and Merafong City policing precincts on Thursday.

Police in the West Rand continued to put their stamp of authority on crime this holiday season after making more than 180 arrests during yet another operation Okae Molao held on Thursday, January 5.

According to Randfontein Police and West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, operations started at 06:00 and concluded at 15:00.

“All law enforcement agencies continued to work hard in all three areas namely Mogale City, Rand West and Merafong City. We went in different directions conducting two roadblocks, three crime prevention and flash groups, as well as one visible policing,” said Sergeant Hendricks.

She added that the three phased operation incorporated other law enforcement agencies and partners including Gauteng Traffic Police, Mogale City Traffic Police and patrollers.

The 182 suspects in total were arrested for a range of offences including murder (2); attempted murder (five), armed robbery (five), common robbery (three), assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm (48), common assault (seven), business robbery (eight), housebreaking and theft (three), business burglary (three), possession of an unlicensed firearm (two), possession of drugs (three), theft (11), fraud (one), malicious damage to property (13), intimidation (one), kidnapping (one), contravention of protection order (two), pointing a firearm (three), crimen enjuria (one), reckless and negligent driving (two), possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition (one), dealing in liquor without a licence (eight), dealing in dagga (one), possession of gold bearing material (six), possession of explosives (three), possession of drugs and dangerous weapon (one), possession of dagga (one), customs and excise Act 91 of 1964 (one) and undocumented persons (20).

Relating to gender-based violence, two suspects were arrested for assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm and 10 other arrests for common assault while four people were arrested for rape.

In addition, a total of 34 traffic fines were issued to the tune of R33 100 at two separate roadblocks.

Acting West Rand Police District Commissioner Brigadier Happy Xaba thanked the members for their hard work and dedication in the absence of Major General Fred Kekana.
