Cops hit the streets to create GBV awareness

Cops from 13 stations on the West Rand interacted with various communities in the district to create GBV awareness.

Police officers from 13 stations in the West Rand visited Randfontein, Mohlakeng, Bekkersdal, Westonaria and Krugersdorp on Wednesday, November 30 to create awareness of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

Randfontein Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said the campaign started at 06:00 and ran until noon. A total of 600 people were reached through the campaign and pamphlets containing pertinent information regarding crime and GBV were distributed.

“All law enforcement agencies were hands on deck and going around the district to get the message across. The main aim was to interact with the community members on how to prevent gender-based violence (GBV) but we also tackled some of the social ills plaguing communities.

“We then educated the public on pertinent social ills including sexual abuse, house robberies, missing persons, carjacking’s, rape and human trafficking.”

She said in addition, parents were specifically addressed to know where their children are at all times.

“This was in addition to addressing the festive season safety tips and urging the community to break the silence on the criminal element,” concluded Sergeant Hendricks.
