Okae Molao operation yields 154 arrests in Rand West City

The District Commissioner of West Rand District Major General Fred Kekana also noted with concern the increasing number of accidents in the district.

The West Rand District Police held an integrated and intelligence driven safer festive season operation in conjunction with operation Okae Molao on Thursday, November 24 in the Randfontein policing precinct.

The operation included the police, Gauteng Traffic, Rand West Traffic, Department of Home Affairs, MMC Human Settlement and the Community Police Forum who joined forces and continued to protect, combat and serve the community.

According to West Rand District Police Spokesperson Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye the purpose of the operation was to prevent crime and increase security to the community.

A roadblock was conducted at the corner of the R28 and R559 to check for stolen vehicles and search for illegal firearms and stolen property while also checking for drunk drivers and for vehicles that aren’t roadworthy.

The District Commissioner of West Rand District Major General Fred Kekana noted with concern the increasing number of accidents in the district.

“The concern came after Randfontein police registered the reckless and negligence driving case that occurred on Thursday, at the R28 and Old Randfontein Road that left eight people, including children injured,” stated Maswanganye.

Kekana further urged commuters to adhere to the rules of the road to avoid more accidents especially during this festive season.

He added that motorists are urged not to drink and drive, to obey the speed limit and they mustn’t use cell phones when driving as it’s illegal and extremely dangerous and they must ensure that the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition at all times.

During the operation, a total of 154 suspects were arrested for the following crimes:

one for murder, one for attempted murder, one for armed robbery, three for common robbery, 37 for assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, 20 for common assault, 10 for domestic violence, two for housebreaking and theft, three for business burglary, three for drunken driving, three for possession of unlicensed firearms, two for dealing in liquor without a license, five for possession of drugs, one for possession of dagga and dangerous a weapon, 29 illegal immigrants, one for illegal immigrants and possession of illicit goods, one for contravention of counterfeit goods, one for possession of stolen property, 11 for theft, three for fraud, 12 for malicious damage to property, one for pointing of a firearm, two for contempt of court, one for culpable homicide and two for reckless and negligent driving.

A pistol, liquor, dagga, drugs and counterfeit tekkies were also confiscated. Approximately seven liquor outlets were also visited and were found to be not complying with regulations and it was closed.

All arrested suspects will appear before the different magistrates courts around the district.
