GDE confirms Grade 3 learner dies after crash in Uitvalfontein

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane confirms one of the children injured in Thursday's crash at the infamous R28/ R41 intersection in Uitvalfontein passed away.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed that one of the children injured in a crash at the infamous R28/ R41 intersection in Uitvalfontein on Thursday morning, November 24 has died.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said, “We are saddened to have learned about an incident which took place on Thursday, 24 November in Uitvalfontein on the R28/R41 where a private scholar transport, with primary and secondary school learners on board, was involved in an accident”.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education Steve Mabona added, ” According to official reports, the incident occurred in the morning and learners from Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary School and Ahmed Timol Secondary School were on board.

“Reports state that a nine-year-old boy and Grade 3 learner from Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary suffered severe injuries as a result of this accident and was airlifted to hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and passed on while receiving medical attention.”

He added that there are two learners who are in a critical condition and they are currently being treated at a medical facility.

“It’s unclear at this stage as to what caused the accident. Investigations are underway to determine the cause. Our psychosocial unit will be deployed to the affected schools, as well as to the affected families for trauma support and counselling,” said Mabona.

“We are saddened by this unfortunate incident which claimed the life of one of our learners. We wish to convey sincerest condolences to the family and the school community. The Department pleads with scholar transport drivers to exercise the utmost vigilance on our roads when transporting our learners,” said MEC Chiloane.
