Police launch 16 Days of Activism against GBV in Hillshaven

The aim of the awareness campaign was for the officers to engage the community regarding crime and safety in general and also address other criminal elements.

Westonaria Police together with the Randfontein Police held a 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence awareness campaign over the weekend in an effort to raise awareness and engage with community members.

This was on November 19 in Hillshaven through an exhibition and was in partnership with South Deep Mine, Goldfields and the Department of Health among other stakeholders.

The aim of the awareness campaign was for the officers to be visible, monitor, empower and engage the community regarding crime and safety in general and also address other criminal elements.

Westonaria police spokesperson Warrant Officer Audrey Sefara said they reached approximately 400 people at the event.

“We joined hands with various stakeholders and engaged the community on issues regarding gender based violence, missing persons, sexual offences, hijackings, house robberies and business robberies.

“We also encouraged them to use support structures and community based victim support initiatives such as Community Police Forums and work with the police in the fight against crime,” said Sefara who added that 800 informative safety tips pamphlets were distributed.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence is an annual international campaign and is observed on November 25 till December 10.
