Rand West City libraries holds reading competition between town’s schools

The learners had to read six books each and had to answer questions based on those books selected.

Learners from different schools in Rand West City recently went head-to-head in a reading competition.

This was on October 28 at the Toekomsrus Library where parents and guardians were also present and looked on with pride while their children tried their best to outshine their opponents.

These were some of the prizes given away on the day to those who did well in the competition.

The programme was an inter-school reading competition between Grade 5 learners from all registered primary schools in Rand West City that fall under the Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) West Rand District.

The main purpose of the event was to encourage reading among the learners.

The trophy was given to the winner of the competition and served as a token of excellence.

Speaking to the Herald, Rand West City Libraries Programme’s Librarian Thandeka Legae said 15 primary schools participated in the competition and all the schools were represented by one learner.

“The learners had to read six books each and had to answer questions based on those books selected. They had to read a range of books such as The angel who wore shoes, The Legend of Spud Murphy, The midnight caller, Problems with a python and The owl who was afraid of the duck, which they were tested on. They displayed great knowledge of the books they read and the audience was entertained. We were all impressed by the talent and their ability of how they were able to answer the questions,” said Legae who added that they are looking forward to the next competition

Parents and guardians of the different children were spectators at the event and watched as their children took each other on in the reading competition.

At the end of the day, Amber van Tonder from Laerskool Modderfontein came out tops and secured the first place, while Tshiamo Mosime from Brandvlei Primary School came out second and Botle Pitso from Matlapaneng Primary School secured the third place.
