Lesotho man shoots and kills fellow foreign national

A 36-year-old Lesotho national has been arrested after he shot and killed another foreign national, also from Lesotho, near a tavern in Bekkersdal on Saturday night October 29.

The deceased was 29-years-old.

Bekkersdal police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said, “The police were patrolling along Khomoeahlaba Street in Bekkersdal just near a local tavern when they heard what sounded like gunshots. As they investigated, they noticed a person lying on the ground and saw another one running away. They gave chase and as they pounced on the suspect, a firearm fell from this person’s hand and they managed to restrain him.

“They walked back to the one lying on the ground and found that he sustained multiple gunshot wounds and he was not moving. He was later declared dead on the scene,” said Sergeant Lefakane.

She added that the suspect was arrested and faces charges of murder and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He already appeared in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court and will remand in custody.

The police are not ruling out the possibility of linking the recovered firearm to other crimes across the district.
