During the search law enforcement officers recovered abandoned knives, zip lock plastics of dagga and loose cigarettes.

TM Letlhake Secondary School in Simunye has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons after a Grade 10 learner was arrested for being found in possession of a pocket knife.

This was at the school premises on October 31 during a massive surprise search operation conducted by the Bekkersdal Police.

The operation was in partnership with the Department of Community Safety, Gauteng Traffic Police, Rand West City Traffic Police, Community Policing Forums (CPF) and concerned parents among others and was targeted at Grade 10 learners.

During the search law enforcement officers recovered abandoned knives, zip lock plastics of dagga and loose cigarettes.

Bekkersdal Police Station Commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela said lawlessness must be dealt with decisively.

Packets of dagga were also found during the search operation. Photo submitted.

“This must serve as a deterrent to other violent learners. Each time we pardon learners and let the department deal with the matter internally, we later follow up on a stabbing incident, therefore this must seize to happen,” said Matamela

Meanwhile, the learner in question is a 19-year-old and already appeared in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court on November 1.

On September 14, three learners were arrested for stabbing four learners at the school in an incident that caused waves in the media.
