Crime-prevention effort in Bekkersdal leads to 16 arrests

The operation was a joint effort aimed at curbing and preventing house robberies, rape and hijacking that have been affecting the Bekkersdal policing precinct.

Bekkersdal Police together with other law enforcement agencies combed the streets of Simunye and Bekkersdal making 16 arrests in the process.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the operation started at 18:00 on Friday, October 21 and concluded at about 02:00 the following day (Saturday, October 22).

“The operation was a joint effort aimed at curbing and preventing house robberies, rape and hijacking that have been affecting the Bekkersdal policing precinct, mostly Simunye extension 1 to extension 5.”

Sergeant Lefakane said the operation was sparked by approximately five suspects who have been terrorising the community.

“Four to five suspects covering their faces with balaclavas have been targeting the community of Simunye robbing them of their valuables at gunpoint.

“They would enter the victim’s house, demand cash and cell phones and even remove food from inside the fridge before fleeing in a getaway vehicle (some on foot).”

Of the 16 arrests made, one person was nabbed for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition while eight people were arrested for the possession of drugs. Seven undocumented foreign nationals were also arrested.

They are expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court soon.

Bekkersdal Police Station Commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela commended the excellent work done by the men and women in blue and added that they will continue with these operations until there is no more space for criminals to operate.

She urged people to report any suspicious behaviour on 08600 10111 or send an anonymous tip-off to my SAPS App that can be downloaded on any smart phone.
