Documentary filmed in Toekies highlights social ills

A documentary is being filmed in Toekomsrus and is aimed at highlighting the plight of the community, as well as some of the challenges residents face.

It also seeks to unpack the different kinds of social ills plaguing the area – including substance abuse and some of the factors contributing to it.

The documentary was filmed by the Don Mattera Legacy Foundation in partnership with Barloworld Empowerment Foundation on October 6 at the home of Enrique Bhana from Women Against Women and Child Abuse (WAWA).

Elvis Presslin from the Don Mattera Legacy Foundation told the Herald that the documentary would give people an insight into the real Toekomsrus.

“This storytelling project we are doing is a starting point to highlight the marginalised community of Toekomsrus. We started off in Eldorado Park and Westbury, and what we were trying to find through our partners at Barloworld Empowerment Foundation, were the story and narrative of these communities. We also want to see if there are any links between these communities and we also want to explore ways of assisting them in the long run.

“We did find similarities with regard to social upheaval as well as social ills. We have also found that they are all without adequate sporting facilities and recreational centres that could have kept children off the streets,” said Presslin.

Don Mattera is a legendary poet and author, and the foundations involved are set also to interview religious leaders, business people and politicians in the area, to get a full picture of Toekomsrus.
