Desperate for Change event to be hosted in Toekies

The event will focus on tackling the scourge of drugs, alcohol abuse, and gender-based violence in communities.

Local resident Helen Duran together with a group of women from the Randfontein and Toekomsrus communities will be hosting a Desperate for Change event at the Toekomsrus Community Hall.

This will be on October 15 and issues around the scourge of drugs, alcohol abuse, and gender-based violence are to be tackled, with hopes of bringing about change.

In an interview with the Herald Duran said they were expecting a crowd of approximately 500 people who will be served breakfast at 08:30 and lunch a little later, free of charge.

“We are really hoping to reach out to the most vulnerable through this event. We want to attract women who are substance abusers and are victims of violence, among other. This will be addition to targeting young people who have left school and are using illegal substances such as drugs, and are abusing alcohol.

We want to give them hope and restoration, and remind them that they can change their lives around for the better,” said Duran.

To achieve this, they will be roping in the services of healthcare practitioners who will address the impact that substance abuse has on one’s health.

They will also bring in counsellors to speak to those who need their services.

We urge parents to be active and involved in their children’s development,” said Duran who added that they were expecting local business people to come to the event and give talks about entrepreneurship.
