Want to make a Heritage Day donation? This resident needs stationery

She will be hosting an event to celebrate Heritage Day and teach children about creativity and the importance of art.

Bekkersdal resident and founder of Shepherd Community Resource Centre, Setyenzwa Makibi is requesting help in the form of donations of stationery and food for an event she will be hosting for young children in the area.

The event is set to take place on Heritage Day September 24 at the W4 Spooktown informal settlement and is aimed at engaging with young children and teaching them about life skills and creativity in general.

Shepherd Community Resource Centre is a non-profit job-creation centre where basic skills are taught. There, Makibi teaches people to start their own food gardens, and there are workshops and sessions on leadership skills as well.

She is asking for old magazines, crayons, scissors, plain drawing sheets or drawing pads and food items to cater to the children.

We request residents and local businesses to donate stationery and food items. This will be used on the day to teach children about creativity, as well as encourage them to be expressive through art. We will also be using old material in some of our projects and hope that this will teach them the importance of recycling, and show them that they could create jobs in the near future.

“In addition to this, we will be tackling behavioural challenges, and teach them basic leadership skills and how they can coexist with one another and accept each other’s differences,” said Makibi.

So far One Stop Stationery has committed to donating certain items, while the Randfontein Publicity Association has pledged to donate other items including snacks for the children.

She added that any other items would be welcomed and used to keep the children busy and entertained throughout the day.

Makibi who used to be a domestic worker and nanny has since become a pre-school teacher and is passionate about children and education.
