My second chance in life – organ recipient

An organ recipient who received a kidney 17 years ago now gives back in his own way by volunteering at the Organ Donor Foundation.

Organ donation can save lives and one recipient is living proof of that.

The 67-year-old Kenneth Naidoo told the Herald that the kidney he received 17 years ago, in 2005, was a true gift and a second chance in life.

He now gives back in his own way by volunteering at the Organ Donor Foundation and was spotted at an Organ Donor Month awareness drive held at Lenmed Randfontein Private Hospital recently.

Hailing from Roodepoort, Naidoo had to wait seven years for his kidney and if he hadn’t receive it he wouldn’t be here right now. At the time he had a chronic kidney infection and the dialysis was failing.

To receive an organ was amazing and a gift. You start living again and look forward to waking up in the mornings. It’s such an amazing feeling that I cannot even describe.”

Having had the transplant, Naidoo said he is in excellent health.

“Even my nephrologist is impressed.”

He urged everyone to become organ donors. Because we all dream of being heroes this is one way of ensuring that you save lives, and your good deed will be remembered long after you have passed on.
