Taxi causes multi-vehicle accident on Main Reef Road

A taxi driver who allegedly did not follow the rules of the road caused a six-vehicle pile-up.

Traffic was brought to a standstill on Main Reef Road in Homelake after two separate accidents occurred on the same stretch of road just minutes apart.

At around 08:00 on August 25 a taxi travelling from Benson Avenue onto Main Reef Road smashed into a car.

Another motorist driving past the accident scene was looking at the damaged taxi and car, and caused another accident.

This escalated to six vehicles being involved in the accident; fortunately no injuries have been reported.

The yellow taxi that smashed into the Toyota Quest after failing to observe coming traffic.

Speaking to the Herald at the scene, Frank Nokane from First Help Towing said the accident affected the flow of traffic immensely.

The taxi that was travelling from Benson Avenue had the option of two lanes with the right of way onto Main Reef Road, but he went onto the third lane without observing the approaching traffic, and that’s when the driver of the Toyota Quest smashed into him. The taxi subsequently smashed into a VW Polo.

“While this was happening, the driver of the Ford Focus smashed into a Jeep while observing the first accident scene. The Jeep then collided with a Honda, causing the pile-up,” said Nokane who was on scene to help tow away the cars.

Law-enforcement officers responded to the scene and the flow of traffic was back to normal at around 11:00.
