WATCH: Man gets 30 years for robbing traffic chief of his gun

'We hope this sentence that this would serve as a deterrent and promote respect for law-enforcement officers' – NPA after Mozambican national had his day in court.

Alfred Gujamo, a Mozambican national was sentenced in the Randfontein Regional Court to 30 years behind bars last month for taking Rand West City Traffic Department chief Kenny Mampondo’s firearm from him two years ago.

The incident that took place inside a bank at Village Square in Randfontein on April 23, 2020 during lockdown shocked employees of the bank, clients going about their business and officers of the law.

Speaking to the Herald Mampondo said he was at the bank that day to collect a savings card when the brazen criminal struck.

“While I was exiting the financial institution, the man grabbed my firearm from the holster. This created havoc as he was also armed with a panga. He ordered the clients who were inside at the time to lie on the ground, but he suddenly took off and everyone started running for their dear lives,” said Mampondo.

Police officers were called to the scene and the suspect, who was identified as Gujamo, was apprehended in the Zenzele informal settlement in less than 48 hours.

Mampondo’s firearm which Gujamo had hidden under his bed was recovered during his arrest.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said they welcome the sentence and hope that this will serve as a deterrence and promote respect for law-enforcement officers.
