Is Abram’s boerewors the best in the country?

The Championship Boerewors competition, which searches for South Africa's best boerewors, is back and Randfonten's Abram is among the Top 10.

The 30th annual search for South Africa’s best boerewors recipe has just intensified with the announcement of the 2022 Championship Boerewors competition’s top 10 finalists. One of them hails from Randfontein.

Launched in 1992 and presented by Shoprite and Checkers, the popular competition continues to receive thousands of entries annually.

This year’s top 10 finalists – which includes 2020 winner, Delano Jasper – were selected following multiple rounds of judging by an expert panel from the South African Chefs Association (SACA). They are (in no particular order):

Nikita de Lange from Alberton, Gauteng; Johan Grundling from Doornkloof East, Gauteng; Delano Jasper from Wellington, Western Cape; Wise Maabane from Marisa, Limpopo; Phozisa Magoda from Fisantekraal, Western Cape; Welcome Magoso from Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal; Steven O’Connor from Melkbosstrand, Western Cape; Siyabonga Radebe from Brooklyn, Gauteng; Christiaan Roodt from Cradock, Eastern Cape; and Abram Sepotokele from Randfontein.

These 10 finalists will prepare and cook their boerewors for a judging panel consisting of Zola Nene, Zanele van Zyl, James Khoza, Martin Kobald and Carmen Niehaus at a special event in Cape Town on Saturday, August 27.

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the winner and runners-up of the 2022 Championship Boerewors competition will be awarded cash prizes for the first time.

• First prize: A Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD6 RB AT plus R50 000 cash
• Second prize: R30 000 in cash
• Third prize: R20 000 in cash

The 2022 Championship Boerewors will also be for sale in Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide, just in time for Heritage Day.
