Inspiring event at library for special women

'The event was amazing and I feel it went very well. I will also have more events on topics like this in the future' – organiser.

Women were empowered during an event for young women at the Randfontein New Library on Friday, August 12.

Organiser Michelle Devadasan said the event was about how to take care of your health as a young woman, how to behave and respect yourself and others, and how to respect your body and your beauty as a woman.

A young lady shared her experience of being a rape victim and there was such a beautiful, open and calm atmosphere among the women.”

Among those who attended the event were Charity Losper from WAWA, Phyllis Malope (founder of Philani Community Development Centre), Sister Keotshepile Seabo (manager of the Randfontein Clinic), and Sharon Govindasamy who holds a PhD in Education and is a lecturer at Unisa and Monash University. Men who supported the women, such as library manager Clement Daniels and Gabriel Molefe from the Rand West City Local Municipality were also present.

According to Devadasan she hosted the event because she saw that some of the town’s young women were lost, and they neglect their health and beauty. She believes every woman is beautiful in their own way.

A friend was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and it breaks my heart to see how she behaves. She once asked me what would be the use of looking after herself or making herself pretty if she is going die anyway, and it encouraged me to have this event to reach out to more young women who are afraid to talk or to live.”

Topics such as cleanliness, beauty, care of one’s body and behaviours were discussed.

“The event was amazing and I feel it went very well. I will also have more events on topics like this in the future.”

Devadasan believes women need to protect themselves and others in our communities to make it a better and safe place for all women.
