To test the gender-equality ‘temperature’ in South Africa, the Herald spoke to those people who say what they think without holding back: our children.
According to 8-year-old Michael Aisam from FJL Wells Primary School in Bhongweni Village, Women’s Day is firstly a celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women across the country.
Asked whether a woman can become the president of the country, the Grade 2 learner responded without hesitation and said that not only can a woman be a president, “I think a woman can be a good president because they always take care of us, they cook for us and keep us healthy, and they always nurse us back to health should we get sick,” said Aisam.
When asked whether a woman can fix a car, 7-year-old Tawana Kanchinga said a woman can do anything, if she puts her mind to it.
Women can do any job if they learn the skills required and train themselves,” said Kanchinga.
