Water leaks in Greenhills a major concern for residents

A Greenhills resident expresses major concern with not only the numerous water leaks in the area but also the process of reporting them.

A resident has shared her concern regarding numerous water leaks in the area and how Randfontein is growing a bad reputation.

Caitlin Vosloo stated that on August 19 she first noticed water leaking from their main water line in Nightingale Road. According to her, the water was seeping from their garden onto the pavement.

“It is an annoyance and an eyesore, but the main concern is that we have low water pressure which strains our gas geyser. We can also not use certain appliances properly, such as our washing machine. When there is a tap open there is no pressure so we can only use one tap at a time,” said Vosloo.

On August 28, she added she noticed another leak at her neighbour’s connection, which is on the same water line. She saw water leaking from their garden onto the pavement, the same as is the case with her.

“We have received no response from Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM). I tried to call all the numbers on the municipality’s website but none of them worked. When I went to report the issue in person on August 22, I was told that none of their phones worked. The problem is that we all work so we have to clock out from work to report the issue in person. The municipality is also not located in a safe area.”

Further, she added their suburb as well as the neighbouring suburbs often experience water leaks on the main line. She mentioned two other instances where water leaks occurred, including in Raven Road where water was spouting up in the middle of the street. Another instance is a ‘river of waste’ running down Greenhills Avenue.

“It’s disgusting and unsanitary. A lot of people walk to work along this route and it’s a health hazard. Things like this make me ashamed to say I live in Randfontein because this town is getting a reputation for being dirty and having infrastructure that is poorly maintained and in various states of dysfunction and disrepair.”

The Randfontein Herald approached RWCLM and spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa who stated that the matter should have been reported to a ward councillor for speedy response and service.

Comment has not been received regarding why water leaks are such a large concern in the area or what is being done to attend to these leaks.
