National assembly and provincial legislature: A call for public participation

The community of Randfontein is invited to partake in written submission proposals for an electoral system.

Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) appeals to communities and organisations to participate in written submission proposals for an electoral system for the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures.

The Electoral Reform Consultation Panel (ERCP) has claimed in a statement they work as a panel to independently investigate, report on and make recommendations in respect of potential reforms of the electoral system for the election of the National Assembly and the election of the Provincial Legislatures.

To start the implementation of this panel, the ERCP invited members of the public to write submissions for proposals for an electoral system. The ERCP also stated that written submissions must include why, how and whether South Africa’s current electoral system should be changed or replaced.

Furthermore, six guiding principles have been designed to assist participants with making their proposals. These principles, according to the ERCP, include inclusivity, fairness, accountability, simplicity, electoral manageability and transparency.

RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa added the municipality would like to invite all residents to partake in the matter. He added that this is a call for public participation.

The closing date for written submissions is September 30. In addition to giving a written submission, participants may also meet with a requester to discuss any relevant issues they might have with the panel.

Written submissions can be delivered by hand to House 4, Ministry of Home Affairs, 909 Arcadia Street, Hatfield. Participants may also mail their submissions to the Electoral Reform Consultation Panel at Private Bag X114, Pretoria, 0001, or an email can be sent to ERCP@dha.gov.za.
