Please keep drain systems clean – municipality

The municipality appeals to residents to refrain from disposing of foreign objects in the stormwater system.

Rand West City Local Municipality strongly advised the community not to dump foreign objects in the stormwater system.

Municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa said residents should refrain from throwing waste, building rubble, sand, nappies and unwanted clothes into stormwater channels.

According to Montshiwa, the purpose of the stormwater systems is to keep houses from flooding.

He emphasised that the municipality often has to unclog the stormwater system to remove the items.

“This ongoing issue greatly hampers the municipality’s ability to maintain the infrastructure. Therefore, communities must be mindful of what they dispose of in the stormwater system,” he expressed.

Furthermore, Montshiwa explained that foreign objects can cause blockages and result in flooding damages.

“By keeping the environment clean and ensuring that no foreign objects enter the stormwater system, we can alleviate the burden on the municipality and improve the quality of water,” he spoke.

Additionally, Montshiwa claimed that it would lessen maintenance costs.
