Water supply challenges: Mayor apologises to Westonaria residents

The Rand West City Local Municipality apologises to the residents of Westonaria for the interruption of the water supply.

Mayor William Matsheke has apologised to residents for the recent interruption of water supply in Westonaria.

Areas such as Vezinyawo, a portion of Spooktown, Simunye Ext 3 and Venterspost have been heavily affected since February 16.

According to Matsheke, Rand Water has since implemented flow control measures at its reservoirs until the system recovers.

“The utility has considered taking this measure to create some stability, avoid the emptying of reservoirs and a complete system collapse,” the Rand West City Local Municipality executive mayor stated.

This measure will ensure that Rand Water takes full control of the water supply and no longer relies on the consumers to reduce consumption.

“To avoid the intermittent water supply, consumers must reduce their consumption. Rand Water has recommended that municipalities impose water restrictions through their bylaws and effectively police their implementation.”

The municipality had initially thought that the water outage was a result of a technical problem up until Rand Water advised the municipality on the implementation of flow control measures.

Rand Water has since closed the control valves in Bekkersdal’s Ntsha Street to control the consumption of water.

Matsheke apologises for the failure to provide an uninterrupted water supply to the community.

“We are again extending our deepest form of apologies to the community for the inconvenience they have experienced over this debacle.

“The municipality has made measures that water tankers be provided to residents while we are dealing with the issue of water restrictions. We are confident that water supply to all affected communities will be restored and the residents will have normal access to water as demanded by the Constitution of South Africa,” Matsheke concluded.
