W’aria residents say life a living hell due to sewage mess

Sewage has been running down various streets in Westonaria for weeks and while residents are fed up, the municipality gave their word the issue will be addressed soon.

Parts of Westonaria are a stinking mess and said to be a health hazard according to locals. This is due to sewage flowing at the corner of Vuurblom and Nerina Street in Westonaria.

Westonaria resident Eleen Swart told the Randfontein Herald that this has been going on for more than three weeks.

“It has made life a living hell. We as the residents of Westonaria are certainly not being prioritised where service delivery is concerned.

We have been sitting with this sewage for weeks on end and the municipality couldn’t even be bothered.

“Cooking has become impossible for us because the stench is so embedded in our homes,” said Swart who added Huntley Street is also affected.

When the Herald was called out to witness the sewage in question, schoolchildren were spotted jumping over the stinking mess just to make it from one side of the road to the other.

According to Westonaria resident Eleen Swart, sewage has been flowing for more than three weeks.

The Herald has since approached Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa who said the issue has been brought to their attention and they are looking into the matter.

We have been made aware of the issues faced by residents and it has been communicated on our municipal WhatsApp complaints group. The issue is getting attention and will be resolved no later than next week,” Montshiwa pledged.
