‘Randfontein water safe for consumption’

Monitoring tests are conducted in areas where the water may be vulnerable to contamination, such as schools, clinics, and shopping centres.

While scores of Hammanskraal residents continue to deal with the devastating effects of the cholera outbreak, locally, the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) is confident in the quality of bulk water it supplies.

RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa has thus reassured the public that its drinking water is of high quality and safe for consumption.

Our drinking water undergoes extensive treatment processes at Rand Water’s treatment plant, and we also conduct regular water quality monitoring in all water storage reservoirs.

“These efforts ensure that drinking water is safe for human consumption and meets the requirements of the South African National Standard for drinking water quality. Monitoring tests are also conducted in areas where the water may be vulnerable to contamination, such as schools, clinics, and shopping centres,” said Montshiwa, who added that this helps to ensure that the water is safe for human consumption.

What this means is that the water coming out of the taps of the many households in Randfontein and its surrounding areas is clean and safe for drinking.

To ensure that this is the case, the municipality said that it also outsources the services of an external company, to conduct quarterly audits at Randfontein Wastewater Treatment Plant, on its behalf.

Montshiwa said all of these are efforts to ensure that the water that they provide to residents is of great quality.

“We have already made significant progress in the wastewater treatment plant and the Randfontein Wastewater Treatment Plant classification was finalised on April 18 this year and a certificate was awarded to that effect.

Having appointed process controllers, the municipality can confidently say it adhered to the regulations and informed the Department of Water and Sanitation of its wastewater treatment plan.

“Water quality outflows are conducted by Rand Water and have been reported to the department. Additionally, the municipality appointed the East Rand Water Company to conduct quarterly audits at Randfontein Wastewater Treatment Plant on behalf of the municipality. The appointment letter has been sent to the Department of Water and Sanitation and the quarterly audits are conducted to ensure that the water produced by Randfontein Wastewater Treatment Plant is of the highest quality.

“The results of the audits are shared with the municipality and the Department of Water and Sanitation, and the municipality also regularly inspects the plant to ensure it complies with all regulations,” he concluded.
