A stinking mess: Sewage still flows at house for more than 10 months

A resident has reported the matter to the municipality since last year and nothing has been done.

Residents of Arend Drive in Helikon Park are still made to live with sewage outside their houses. This despite having reported the matter to the municipality more than 10 months ago.

This is the reality for Elize van der Westhuizen who has had to bear the brunt of the stinking mess – that is attracting flies and all sorts of insects into her yard.

Speaking to the Herald, she said that she and her family have exhausted every means possible with the municipality, but they just won’t get help.

“This problem started sometime last year, and we have reported it on numerous occasions. No one seems to bother themselves and have it checked out. As it stands, the sewage flows over the grass and the smell gets trapped there. The smell gets worse on hot days,” Van der Westhuizen said.

Meanwhile, the Herald has also on numerous occasions tried to assist Van der Westhuizen and her family, but all efforts have been in vain.

The Herald spoke to Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa once again, who said that he will consult with the relevant department and push for the matter to be resolved.
