Zenzele residents demand better service delivery

Residents of Zenzele delivered a memorandum of demands which highlighted the need for the formalisation and electrification of the area.

Scores of Zenzele residents recently took to the streets and marched to the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) building for better service delivery.

This was on January 30 and was an effort to air their frustrations and raise demands of wanting the area to be formalised as a township.

Theirs on the day was to deliver a memorandum of demands, which highlighted the need for the formalisation and electrification of the area. This is in addition to seeking a mobile clinic that will be easily accessible, as well as mobile classrooms for learners in the area.

Speaking to the Herald in an interview, Zenzele resident Hamilton Sathekgi said they are fed up of with being put on the back burner.

Police presence was high outside the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) offices, during a peaceful protest by Zenzele residents.

“We are here today to raise our frustration with the municipality for their lack of service delivery. We feel as though we are not being prioritised as the people of Zenzele.

So many years have passed, and the area is still an informal settlement and there’s no sign of service delivery from the municipality. They are not even supplying us with electricity.

“Our main issue is also the formalisation of Zenzele. We believe that once this is done, we can be able to get some sort of assistance from them. We also request a mobile clinic and a mobile primary school. We also want tar roads in the area,” said Sathekgi.

Meanwhile, the memorandum of demands was accepted and signed by Member of the Mayoral Committee Nontombi Molatlhegi on behalf of RWCLM Mayor Gladys Khoza.

Scores of residents from Zenzele informal settlements took to the streets and embarked on a peaceful protest, calling for the formalisation of the informal settlement.
