Empty promises as parts of town remain in the dark

Residents in Finsbury and surrounding areas can expect to spend yet another day in the dark, if not the rest of the week as the contractor failed to stick to his promise of having power restored by this past weekend.

There is still no clear indication when electricity will be restored to Finsbury and surrounding areas.

This comes as the contractor (appointed by Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) to help restore electricity connection in the area) failed to keep to its promises and has delayed one completion of the project. News of this comes as residents continue to be up in arms, as the electricity crisis continues in the area and has left residents in the dark for more than three weeks.

This is a result of cable theft in the area which continues to be a thorn in the side of residents. This has affected not only residents of Finsbury but those of Ten Acres, Kocksoord, Middelvlei, Peace Haven, and other areas as well.

Just last week, on February 2, RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa issued a statement and said that if all went well, the electricity in Finsbury would be restored that weekend and that other areas would also follow in phases.

“The contractor has indicated if all goes to plan, they will switch on the electricity at the Finsbury substation on Saturday or latest Sunday, where we will restore electricity in phases to different areas or streets. RWCLM will keep on updating the community of Finsbury and surrounding areas on the progress until the electricity has been restored. We would also like to apologise again for the inconvenience caused,” said Montshiwa at the time.

The Herald again spoke to RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa during an interview and he said currently, there is no news as to when the power will be back on.

There is currently no update regarding the electricity issue but residents will be kept in the loop,” Montshiwa said.
