Mayor and Miss Earth join hands in planting trees at local schools

The purpose of the initiative was to raise awareness and put actions in combating the challenges that emanate from the rise in new technology

Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) Executive Mayor Gladys Khoza together with other councillors traded their formal office suites and dresses for overalls by planting fruit trees at Haartzstraat Primary School and Randfontein Secondary School, both in Toekomsrus.

This was on October 21 and the Mayor was joined by her special guest Miss Earth SA 2022 Ziphozethu Sithebe.

The purpose of the initiative was to raise awareness and put actions in combating the challenges that emanate from the rise in new technology

This was also aimed at tackling challenges that impede environmental preservation, as well as contribute to global warming and other issues.

Mayor Khoza said a total of 10 trees were planted at each school and urged learners to take good care of the plants.

“I’m here today to plant these trees and I know with you and myself that these trees are going to grow. When they grow it means something to you. These trees are going to contribute very much in your future and you must take care of them,” said Khoza who named one of the trees Zipho, which translates to Gifts.

Ziphozethu also spoke at the schools and said that she is happy to be making such a contribution.

“I’m so happy to be with you all to plant these beautiful fruit trees. I’m so honoured to be with you and part of the Miss Earth brand is bringing together people about the planet. These are peach trees and I hope you will enjoy them when you grow older, thank you so much for having me,” said Ziphozethu.
