Residents fix potholes themselves

The two receive at least R120 per day from motorists as a token of their appreciation for their efforts.

Two Randfontein residents are making a living in an unusual way. They have started fixing potholes throughout the area while collecting the little money they can get from motorists.

The Herald spotted the duo, Siyabonga Mntsini and William Motsamai on Main Road in Finsbury near the plots while they were doing their bit for the community.

Speaking to the paper, Mntsini said they were trying to ease the frustrations of motorists who have to drive on roads littered with potholes.

My friend and I are unemployed and while walking around seeking employment, we decided to do something about the deteriorating state of our roads.

“We obviously don’t have the right material so we fill them up with sand, just to ease the rough ride a bit. We understand that this might not be much but it is definitely something,” said Mntsini.

They said this kept them busy and helped put food on the table while looking for employment.
