Municipality warns the public of email scam

The municipality issued a warning to customers regarding a recent spate of scams via email.

Rand West City Local Municipality has discredited fraudulent emails currently circulating.

According to municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa, messages are circulating that claim to be from the municipality. He added that these messages may ask for contact details regarding tenders.

“The messages mention the appointment of a service provider for security services over 36 months. The municipality wants to make it clear that these communications are phishing attempts. We urge the public to ignore any emails suggesting the aforementioned,” Montshiwa stated.

He further explained that phishing emails often use urgent and alarming language to provoke immediate action.

They may include suspicious links or attachments and may come from email addresses that resemble, but are not identical to, official ones.

Montshiwa advised the public to always verify the sender’s address and avoid clicking links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.

“Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the municipality,” he concluded.
