Criminals strike hard in Rand West this festive season

Local security company Mapogo A Mathamaga revealed they had their hands full during the festive season, especially the last few days of 2023.

Criminal activity was seemingly high across Rand West City this festive season.

A total of eight serious incidents were reported between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Six of those incidents were related to housebreaking and theft.

Local security company Mapogo A Mathamaga’s operations manager Danie Vermeulen admitted they had their hands full during the festive season.

“We had quite a busy festive season. The first incident recorded was that of a housebreaking and theft in De Villiers Street, Randridge on Christmas Day.

“Perpetrators gained entrance onto the property by cutting a fence and forcing open a security door of the house and flatlet before proceeding to steal a TV, a kettle, and a sewing machine.

“This incident was followed by another one of stock theft in Rikasrus on December 28. Here perpetrators gained entrance onto the premises by cutting the fence in several places before moving on to steal 11 sheep which were later recovered and handed back to the lawful owner.

“Apart from this, our reaction officers also responded to an incident of housebreaking and theft in Homelake on December 29. It’s understood that the perpetrators gained entry onto the property by bending the rail on the gate and went on to force open the garage door and steal a BMW motorcycle.

“Another incident responded to on the same day [December 29] is that of housebreaking and theft on Ivan Street, Homelake where power tools were stolen from the property,” said Vermeulen.

He added that on December 30, their officers also attended to an incident of housebreaking and theft in Greenhills Avenue where perpetrators gained entry by jumping over a perimeter fence.

“They went on to break a window and proceeded to steal a computer screen,” said Vermeulen.
