Five robbers shot dead during shootout with police

The perpetrators are believed to have robbed a person who had just withdrawn an undisclosed amount of money from a bank in Carletonville on the far West Rand.

Five robbers were fatally wounded and another arrested following a massive shootout with police and Hawks on the outskirts of Rand West City days ago.

According to police, the perpetrators were followed from Carletonville after an armed robbery incident where they are believed to have targeted someone who had just withdrawn a large amount of money from a bank in the area.

Speaking to the Randfontein Herald in an interview, Randfontein Police Station Commander Brigadier Jacob Manamela confirmed the shootout with police occurred on the N14 and Ventersdorp highway at about 15:30 on November 27.

“The Hawks who were looking into the matter in Carletonville received details regarding the incident and followed up. The information led to a certain vehicle which was spotted on the road in question in the Randfontein precinct and when the occupants of the car realised that the police were on their tail, they immediately opened fire. Police then returned fire.

“Eventually, the five robbers were fatally wounded while another robber, a woman, was arrested. She was driving in a separate car and was unharmed,” said Manamela.
