Herder assaulted, 150 cattle targeted on R559

Tac-Med Crime Prevention Unit on the West Rand confirms 150 cattle were targeted and a herder assaulted as well as robbed in a stock theft incident between Randfontein and Carletonville.

Cattle were targeted, and their herder was attacked and robbed, along with his wife, in a stock theft incident just days ago on the R559 between Randfontein and Carletonville.

At about 19:15 on November 8, the head and founder of the Tac-Med Crime Prevention Unit on the West Rand Chris Lessing confirmed that they received a call to assist a herder.

According to Lessing, about six armed robbers assaulted the cattle herder before taking valuable possessions from him and his wife. The robbers then proceeded to take 150 cattle.

“Eight of our members responded and moved in different directions in search of the robbers.”

Lessing further claimed that the robbers had a bunch of dogs accompanying them while chasing the cattle in the direction of the R559.

“After the responding members managed to find a few of the cattle, they decided to move deeper into the thicket to find the remaining cattle. Subsequently, all of the cattle were retrieved and led back to the premises.”

Efforts were made to try and find the robbers thereafter, however, Lessing stated that it was to no avail. A search was conducted after 00:30 on November 9 for the culprits.

“It was a huge area that we needed to search. We remained on the premises while the herder counted the cattle to ensure that all animals were retrieved. Afterward, we withdrew from the scene,” Lessing added.

Lessing emphasised that stock theft is becoming more common and is a major concern.

“Stock theft is a big problem within the community and the rates are increasing uncontrollably. Camera systems, trained guards, decent enclosures and pens, electric fences, alarm systems, and good lighting could be factors contributing to stock theft prevention,” he said.

He warned that stock theft happens due to the need to purchase and sell livestock in the country. As well as the need for processed meat.
