The Myburgh Foundation Community Safety Unit along with police embarked on an operation to clamp down on illegal mining activity in Westonaria and Bekkersdal.

This was on November 6 and the operation started at 09:00 until 16:00.

Founder and operations manager at the foundation, Randy Christian, said that they were all hands on deck during the operation and happy to have assisted the men and women in blue.

“The illegal mining operation was led by police officers from various stations in the West Rand District as well as our safety unit, as we are a partner with the police. We conducted raids on suspected illegal mining hot spots and we confiscated gold-bearing material as well as illegal mining equipment.

“We also arrested numerous undocumented persons during this time and the operation lasted for most of the day. As it stands, illegal mining is a major concern for us on the West Rand and we are doing everything we can to combat the scourge,” said Christian.
